Bike riding can be dangerous, but it is even more so at night. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to make your ride as safe as possible. The following are safety tips for bike riding at night.
1. Wear Light clothing
You want people to see you. The last thing a rider biking at night wants is to blend in with the background so that an oncoming car does not see him or her. Although black might look “cool,” you are definitely safer going with fluorescent yellow or hot pink while you are biking. It might not need to be so blatant if you do not own any of those colors, but you should pick relatively light colors or a white outfit. Another thing you can do is to wear some sort of reflective vest. Other people might put reflectors on themselves or even lights in order to make themselves more visible to others.
3. Wear a helmet
You might be more likely to have a problem when biking at night. If you are unfortunate enough to get into an accident you are going to want to be as safeguarded as possible. That means wearing a helmet, which is a good idea no matter when you are bike riding. A helmet can even save your life by preventing a potentially serious head injury.
4. Be careful where you ride
Obviously, riding in the middle of a dark street where cars race around might not be the best idea. If you can, stick to bike lanes or bike paths. The better lit a place is, the better people will be able to see you and the less chance of getting into an accident that you have.
5. Make sure to follow all rules and laws
There are rules and laws that bike riders have just as car drivers have. Obviously, there are roads where bikers are prohibited from, such as many highways. You will want to make sure to adhere to that. Follow all applicable traffic laws. Try to make sure that your intentions are clear, such as when you are turning in front of someone. Be careful about assuming that someone sees you or is going to give you the right of way. Even if they are supposed to, they do not always do so, and you will want to be safe.
